Overhaul - Tuning Oldtimers

Sometimes, engine components show failures that either endanger the reliability or can cause additional damage in case of further use. Mostly, the engine, the gear box, potential overdrive and the final drive are concerned. For other components, it’s in most cases more advantageous economically to replace them.

Border cases, such as carburettors should be regarded case by case. Normally, we have components such as start engines, screen wiper engines, dynamos, alternators, shock-absorbers, control houses, etc available on stock, newly or for trading-in.

The engine gives in most cases clear signals when something is going wrong. Abnormal noises, overheating, irregular rotation, stopping or difficult start of the car. These are timely detected during the periodical maintenance.

TUNING

Generally spoken, tuning is in most cases related to boosting the engine in order to achieve additional power. Improving suspension and brakes in proportion to the increase of power is as important. In relation to car boosting , a regulation is available and we advise consulting it in order to regularize if needed. Boosting an engine happens step by step, the more steps, the more power. The sequence of the steps is important and should not be mixed up.

Such as:
  • balancing of rotating parts
  • weighing of parts going up and down : pistons, drive rods
  • flowing of intake and outlet channels
  • measuring combustion chambers
  • increasing compression, larger valves, sharper cam shaft
  • lighter flywheel
  • steel crankshaft
  • lightweight cam followers
  • cam shafts from road use to rally or racing applications
  • engine management
  • etc.

The first four interventions only optimize the existent equipment. Power increases by +/- 10 hp without any disadvantageous consequences. Going further from here on gives more power but less reliability.
